Beverly’s Sustainability Efforts

Most residents are not aware that the City of Beverly has been working to become sustainable for some time and many initiatives are being developed and implemented. Visit Beverly’s website for current initiatives and news.

Two key accomplishments have been the creation of a Beverly Sustainability Director position, currently held by Erina Keefe, and the joint Beverly/Salem climate action plan, “Resilient Together”. The following information comes from that website:

• We’ve seen a 71% increase in rainfall since 1958.

• We’ve seen a 1 foot rise in sea level over the last century and anticipate a 3 foot rise in sea level by 2050.

• From 1971-2001, the average number of days above 90 degrees Fahrenheit was 7 days annually. By 2050, this is projected to be 31 days annually.

We are embracing a proactive, collaborative approach in this Climate Action and Resilience Plan to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees Celsius by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and to build resilience to its unavoidable impacts.

While many climate changes are inevitable, with bold, rapid action, we can prevent the most extreme impacts to our communities and our ecosystems.

Taking action requires support from state and federal governments as well as an understanding of what our communities’ emissions will look like, depending on the actions we take.
