Explore! North Shore: Winter Hike at Moraine Farm
The Explore! North Shore hiking series will get you outside and moving at some lesser explored Trustees properties across the Northeast Region, at the right time of year to see these special places shine. These beginner hikes will not be too strenuous, and will offer frequent stops for learning and taking in the beauty of our special places.
Join a guided hike at Moraine Farm to take in the winter wonders of this beautiful lakeside landscape, and learn the rich natural and human history of this special place. This easy/moderate hike will last ~2 hours and cover ~2 miles, over gravel & grass trails with minimal elevation change. While strolling through the woods on the shore of Wenham Lake, you will be transported back in time to when this landscape was formed by glaciers thousands of years ago. Emerge from the woods and stroll the carriage loop of the Phillips family estate, designed by Fredrick Law Olmstead. Learn how the partnership of several families and organizations has allowed for the preservation and public enjoyment of Moraine Farm as a unique cultural, natural, and agricultural resource.
Event Cost: $25

They offer one of the most accessible dune landscapes in New England and trails that provide a firsthand look into the delicate and ever-changing dune habitat. This includes numerous lookouts offering stunning views of Choate Island and the varied ecosystems of Castle Neck, including Pitch Pine forests and naturally occurring cranberry bogs.
The Family Explorer hiking series will get you and your young explorers outside and moving at Trustees properties across the Northeast Region. These family-friendly hikes cover less ground to accommodate smaller strides and have more frequent stops to look, listen, and learn from our Outdoor Guides. February Vacation at Appleton Farms - The Trustees of Reservations
In the winter, many people hunker down to stay indoors, but at Appleton Farms, we make the most of the cold, quiet season. There is no better place to spend winter farm days than in exploring in the snow and learning to love the outdoors in all seasons! This program is for kids who are looking to make friends, explore the forests and fields of the farm, and learn about life in New England in winter, including learning about a type of winter farming – maple sugaring! Every day will include an outdoor adventure of hiking, snowshoeing, or other farm explorations.
This is a school vacation drop-off program running Monday-Friday 9am-3pm, February 16-20. Campers should be prepared to spend days mostly outdoors and will need appropriate clothes including hats, gloves, and boots. We will have snack and lunch on the farm (families provide their own campers’ food). A parent handbook will be provided to all parents and registration requires submission of child’s health forms, per licensing requirements. This program is licensed by the Ipswich Board of Health.

In Beverly there are about 25 state certified vernal pools and almost 100 other wet spots that have potential to be certified. She will cover what is a vernal pool, what are the plant and animal indicators of one, and why they are so important ecologically and just so cool. There will also be a demonstration of how to use Mass Mapper to help you find local vernal pools and see them for yourself!
Winter on the Lake at Moraine Farm
Hike along the shores of beautiful Wenham Lake on a glacial moraine and learn how this ridge formed thousands of years ago, as glaciers melted, scattering about rocks and sand to form the landscape we see today. Learn also about the importance of Wenham Lake as a water source, both today, and in years past when ice from the lake was shipped to England for Queen Victoria! This hike will start with an interactive timeline game, and then head out on the trails to observe how human and natural activities have shaped the landscape over time.

Crane Lecture: Native American Art & Exhibitions at The Trustees
November is Native American Heritage Month. Join us for a lecture with Tess Lukey, The Trustees Associate Curator of Native American Arts. Learn about The Trustees efforts to center Indigenous voices and culture via our exhibits and programming, to recognize the important contributions of Indigenous peoples to the lands now stewarded by The Trustees. Tess will discuss her work curating the Across Boundaries Across Barriers gallery at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, focused on the medicine wheel & seven directions, featuring historic and contemporary works of art from several Native American communities in five sections that center the concepts associated with each direction. Tess will also discuss recent collaborations with local Indigenous educators & The Trustees statewide education team to develop curricula connecting students to this gallery and the medicine wheel. Finally, Tess will touch on other projects and collaborative work, such as the next installation in the Art & the Landscape series: The Land Tells Our Stories, which will feature outdoor art coming to The Crane Estate in Spring 2026.
About our speaker:
Tess Lukey joined The Trustees in 2022 as our first-ever Curator of Native American Art to develop exhibitions and research initiatives related to The Trustees’ Indigenous art collections.
Lukey, an Aquinnah Wampanoag tribal member and lifelong New Englander, works across the state, and is based both at Fruitlands Museum and the deCordova Sculpture Park & Museum. She works closely with community members, collectors, and donors for potential acquisitions while offering broader access to and knowledge of The Trustees’ collections of art made by Indigenous peoples.
Lukey brings to The Trustees an extensive curatorial and educational experience. She has worked for the Museum of Fine Arts and the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, and the John Sommers Gallery in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She has also completed fellowships at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, and the Hibben Center for Archaeology Study and the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology in Albuquerque.
Lukey has a bachelor’s degree in ceramics and art history from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a master’s degree in Native American art history with a minor in museum studies from the University of New Mexico. In her spare time, Lukey is a traditional potter and basket weaver practicing the techniques of her own Indigenous community. She currently lives in Sutton, Mass., the ancestral home of the Nipmuc Nation, with her partners and children.

As part of Green Beverly's Autumn Earth Days Film Festival, and in partnership with Beverly Waste Reduction Committee, Three Sisters Garden Project, and the Cabot Theater, we present Kiss The Ground: an inspiring and groundbreaking film that reveals the first viable solution to our climate crisis... regenerating the world’s soils.
Soil regeneration can completely and rapidly stabilize Earth’s climate, restore lost ecosystems and create abundant food supplies. Using compelling graphics and visuals, along with striking NASA and NOAA footage, the film artfully illustrates how, by drawing down atmospheric carbon, soil is the missing piece of the climate puzzle. This film is appropriate for middle school aged and older. Stay tuned for registration.
