FREE & LOW COST ACTIONS

You may already do some of these in your home. Try something new today from the list below.

Keep the temperature low:

  • if your thermostat isn’t programmable, replace it

  • program your thermostat to make sure you’re heating your home only when you need it

  • wear an extra layer and keep your home cooler

  • lower the temperature of your water heater

  • wash your clothes in cold water

Zone your home (supplemental heat):

  • assess where you spend most of your time

  • lower overall home temperature and, if available, use supplemental heat to the primary room(s) you occupy (for more on this see Efficient Heating)

  • close heat vents in rooms that are rarely used (if you don’t use it, don’t heat it)

Contain the heat:

  • seal drafty doors and windows

  • lock windows

  • close storm windows

  • use thermal drapes in the evenings

  • let sunlight in during the day

  • close doors to retain heat in rooms

  • close fireplace dampers and/or insulate unused flues

  • cover drafty, unused outlets

Make repairs:

  • seal cracks in your foundation or walls

  • replace broken window panes or storm windows

  • clean air ducts and replace filters for maximum efficiency

  • service boiler, furnace, or heat pump annually

  • insulate hot water pipes

  • properly insulate your home (some insulation can be added for free or at a steep discount through Mass Save, below)
